Laplink Connections: Interview with Olaf Kehrer, Co-Founder of O&O Software

Data security is of paramount importance to PC users around the world. Recently, however, worldwide PC problems were caused by a bug in a widely used security software called CrowdStrike. What should PC users and IT teams do during data security crises like this?

In the latest episode of Laplink Connections, Laplink CEO Thomas Koll interviewed Olaf Kehrer, Co-Founder and Managing Director of O&O Software, to discuss the recent CrowdStrike event and its significant impact on millions of PCs globally which caused billions of dollars of damage to organizations around the world. The CrowdStrike bug in its faulty update wreaked havoc worldwide creating flight cancellations, unavailability of data in mission-critical organizations such as hospitals, factories, financial institutions, and more. During their Connections discussion, Thomas and Olaf provided valuable advice for how companies can avoid and mitigate these kinds of scenarios in the future.

Olaf explained how when computers crash during a compromised software update, IT teams need to be able to fix their organizations’ PCs quickly and effectively. Typically, IT teams would use a remote management system but with the CrowdStrike bug, PCs were not able to boot. In these kinds of cases, Thomas explained how IT teams and users must react quickly after a security breach to fix their PCs so they can get back to work.

Laplink’s team has been working with O&O Software’s team for many years in a strong partnership to bring advanced technology to companies worldwide to help IT teams and users with many different issues. Laplink Everywhere’s integration with O&O’s BlueCon technology allows users to access a recovery environment during the boot process before the Windows operating system starts. In addition, Laplink Everywhere works with Intel’s vPro technology to allow users to boot a PC even if it is turned off. Both Thomas and Olaf explained that this means that if users have Laplink Everywhere working together with both O&O’s BlueCon technology and Intel’s vPro technology, they can then remotely fix a PC that doesn’t boot up and shows a blue screen. In short, Laplink Everywhere can be a game changer and PC-saving solution for PCs compromised during a faulty software update like the recent CrowdStrike scenario.

In his role leading O&O Software’s product development, Olaf’s primary focus is developing new concepts in the area of system tools as well as in supervising the expansion and continuation of his company’s existing product line. He also wrote the series of Studies “Data, Data Everywhere,” in which he analyzed the way used hard drives were being handled and what occurs with non-deleted data. Prior to co-founding O&O Software, Olaf studied at the Technical University of Berlin and graduated with a degree in Computer Science.
