As Director of Customer Experience at Laplink, I hear many stories that give insight into the variability that our support and product teams face every day. These stories tell us that variables arise mostly in relation to what our users have on their PCs and how they have them set up, but also to the extent of the hardware configurations we see.
There are thousands of different SKUs of laptops and desktops and nearly all of them have sub configurations that can be built as well. Over the last few years, we have continued to see hardware configurations in which the OEM includes a very fast, but small, hard drive (SSD or NVMe) to house the operating system in order to make boot and OS level operations quickly. OEMs know that users still need space for their data, so they usually provide another drive (HDD or SSD) which is larger and usually slower.
On paper, this isn’t necessarily a problem. Users should store their data on the larger drive and leave Windows on the faster drive. The problem lies in the way Windows handles the locations of Windows Libraries, such as Pictures, Documents, Downloads and Music.
By default, Windows saves Pictures, Documents, Music, Downloads and Videos onto the small SSD, which fills up the drive and causes a poor customer experience. It’s possible to change these manually, but we are all about enhancing ease of use! So, we at Laplink decided to simplify the process of changing these library locations into a nifty wizard — now known as Reconfigurator!
Reconfigurator is a brand-new stand-alone experience (also included in PCmover editions) that has a single goal: to remap Windows Libraries to another drive. This is extremely useful for users who have a PC with a small SSD but larger secondary drive.
I’m excited for this new experience to reach users hands and help them with this specific issue. At Laplink, our goal is to increase user satisfaction during the refresh of a PC. To that end, we will continue to listen to our users and find new opportunities for us to improve their experiences.
