Our Journey to Exclusivity

Laplink was founded in 1983 as “Traveling Software,” soon after the original IBM PC release. We went on to forever change how PCs connect and transfer data. The original “LapLink” software & cable helped launch an entire category of connectivity software – file transfer, synchronization, remote control, and migration. Since then, our flagship product, PCmover, has become the only Microsoft and Intel recommended migration solution on the market today.

Looking Forward

“After 36 years, millions of customers, and billions of files, Laplink is still connecting people and their PCs,” shared Thomas Koll, Laplink’s CEO. “And, with the end of support for Microsoft’s Windows 7 coming up January 2020, it is even more imperative we make PCmover available to organizations needing to quickly and efficiently move off Windows 7. Throughout our 36 years, PCmover Enterprise has quickly become the leading product for PC refreshes in large F1000 companies, mid-market organizations, government and education. The ROI is immediate, substantial and visible.”

PCmover tackles headaches caused by Windows 7 EOS

It’s time now. In less than 10 months Microsoft® will officially end support of Windows 7®. Unlike with previous operating systems, Microsoft has offered customers the continuation of security updates for a period of time as part of a Windows subscription. The price will be $25-50 dollars per PC going up to $100 to $200 in year 3.

Unless organizations have vital applications that will not run on Windows 10, most will decide to refresh their PCs with Windows 10. Some will use existing hardware but given the typical PC replacement cycle, most will move to new hardware.

Microsoft is rapidly moving their products to the cloud and connecting their traditional Office applications with new cloud-based applications, which should make us more productive and enable a new way to work. OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint and other Microsoft products create additional opportunities to share, communicate and collaborate.

Another step forward is the introduction of Azure Active Directory. Directory services were always local and organizations had challenges to always map their new organization structures (new acquisitions, organization changes, subsidiaries and sister companies) in the local Active Directory. Moving to Azure Active Directory allows IT departments to manage all of this in the cloud and harmonize both the user and organizational structures.

We at Laplink are committed to making your PC migration projects more efficient, enabling an easier process when PC lease cycles end, mitigating end user downtime during break/fix scenarios, and most of all, saving you time and money. PCmover Enterprise has quickly become the leading product for PC refreshes in large F1000 companies, mid-market organizations, government and education. The ROI is immediate, substantial and visible. Our sales teams have shared with me many customers’ feedback that have proven we continue to achieve our commitments. A large retail customer said, “With PCmover we save 5 hours per desktop”; a large service company said, “We are saving $100,000 per year in help desk support”; and a global professional and financial services firm described how PCmover Enterprise enabled them to move over 175,000 PCs to Windows 10, which was more efficient and cost effective than Microsoft’s User State Migration Tool (USMT).

Depending on your scenario, whether you need to move the complete PC personality including applications, data and settings to a new PC or clean/repair/upgrade an existing PC, PCmover Enterprise gives IT teams the power to configure the product according to their policies and goals. CIOs are even using PCmover Enterprise to configure a near zero-touch & fully automated transfer that is executed by the user and runs in the background.

Moving to Azure Active Directory creates some headaches when transferring a local Active Directory profile to the new AAD profile. Laplink has been working very closely with Microsoft to help overcome this issue by creating a new feature of PCmover Enterprise called PCmover Profile Migrator. Now what was previously completed manually is automated with PCmover Profile Migrator, saving IT teams hours of manual profile creation.

You can receive a free, fully functional evaluation copy of PCmover Enterprise here or just reply to this email. Whether you are moving off of Windows 7 or need to increase new PC deployments, PCmover is the solution!

Regards,

35 Years Later

Sometimes it is hard to remember the beginning of computing. Today technology is an integral part of our lives, and the mobile cloud, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and the internet of things are all around us. Discussions about autonomous driving and even autonomous flying show high confidence that we can achieve these goals within five years. Tremendous technological progress has been made overall. Nothing was more impressive to me than the swarm of drones that Intel displayed in the 2018 Winter Olympics opening ceremony, a combination of a lot of new technology.

35 years ago as Laplink began, we also witnessed the birth of the first mobile computer: the Radio Shack M 100. The M 100 had some innovative qualities that have survived the progress of time: mobile size (laptop), LCD screen and basic computing functions.

Laplink Software was a pioneer in the early days of computing. Then called “Traveling Software,” the company built the first products for the M 100: T-DOS, Travelling Appointment Manager, Expense Manager and T-Word, the word processor that could change its font size. In the years following, groundbreaking software was created to “sync” the Sharp handheld and consequently Apple’s Newton handheld. With the emergence of the PC, Traveling Software shifted its focus to the PC and hit a home run. Launching “LapLink”, the company revolutionized direct peer-to peer communication between two PCs over a patented direct-connect cable. It was the first ad-hoc network and the go-to product for all IT professionals.

Today we take connectivity for granted and easily move files among networks and the cloud. However, everyday computing still presents challenges in some areas. Laplink saw the need for PC migration software to transfer applications, files, and settings from an old PC to a new PC. Creating the innovative PCmover software, Laplink again pioneered a whole new category. With the PCmover family of products, Laplink is the world market leader and continues to innovate to make it easier for every user to manage their PCs.

Laplink is proud to help consumers, small businesses, public institutions and the largest enterprises effectively “move” into a new PC. We are grateful to our customers around the world who trust us and we are not stopping now. New generations of software are needed to manage the transition to the cloud and manage your devices no matter where they are. Competition and innovation are constant drivers to work on new products and new services. The large Tech Giants dominate the news and announce record earnings, but sometimes the small, nimble and agile companies make the difference. Laplink has done so for 35 years!

Please be sure to come visit our party on Tuesday, May 15, at www.laplink.com. We will have free presents and special offers to celebrate our 35th anniversary!

PCmover Saves Days of PC Setup

The other day I got some feedback about PCmover from David in Arizona that I wanted to share with everyone. It’s so great to hear from our customers and learn from them.

“I have been using PCmover for about 10 years. Migrating many systems from XP to Vista to Win 7 to Win 10. It always makes my work much less and as you learn how to use PCmover effectively it’s even more reliable.

I just used a copy of PCmover last week. After installing Windows 10 on the new computer I decided to set all my settings manually rather than transfer them. After my customization was done on the new PC I loaded PCmover on both machines Source and Target and used a [Laplink] USB cable (2.0) to do the transfer…I deselected moving my movies and music files as I restored those using an external drive I use for archiving. So I was basically transferring all my PROGRAMS (Over 100) and other files.

A little over an hour later DONE!!!!

I checked all the files and all the PROGRAMS….ALL of my files and PROGRAMS had been transferred and only one or two required to be reactivated.

That would have taken me at least a week to do working all day long.  Pretty good value for money…

The thing is…PCmover really is an awesome product. I hate it when I see people in review forums say it doesn’t work…I’ve been using PCmover for a long time and can definitely attest to it working and working very well. ”

Laplink Solves Hidden Dangers of Moving off Windows XP

Laplink and Microsoft partnered to offer PCmover Express for Windows XP to support PC migrations of data and settings from a Windows XP machine to a Windows 10 machine.

End of support for Windows XP occurred in April 2014. Windows XP users who chose to stay on the operating system after April faced an end to hot-fixes, technical assistance, and security updates. Remaining on Windows XP was risky; many reports pointed out that the lack of security updates would make it a big target for hackers, viruses, and other malware. When Microsoft released security updates for Windows 7 and 8, attackers checked and tested Windows XP for these same vulnerabilities. If the vulnerabilities were shared, it made it easy for a hacker to release malware into the target XP computer.

Studies suggest that Windows XP users are six times more likely to suffer from a virus or other malware. We highly recommend that XP users upgrade their current operating system or transfer to a new Windows 10 PC. Our flagship product, PCmover, helps users move into a new PC seamlessly, so there’s no reason to face the risks that Windows XP carries.

PCmover for Windows XP transfers all selected files and personalized settings from an old PC to a new PC. Its streamlined process handles everything automatically using a step-by-step wizard to guide the user through individual selections. Users can choose to transfer everything, or they can select which files, and settings to leave behind. PCmover handles the rest!

For users interested in migrating their applications, also, they should look at PCmover Professional. There’s no need to find old serial numbers, license codes, or installation disks because PCmover transfers most applications to the new PC installed and ready-to-use.

PCmover-Professional-Left-New

PCmover also comes with 24/7 Free Transfer Assistance. Users can simply call the toll-free number and receive expert guidance from a certified migration specialist. The migration specialist will walk any user through the complete transfer process, including setting up peripherals like printers, wireless internet, and more.

There is a hidden danger behind moving off of Windows XP that many PC users aren’t considering. Once a user leaves the old PC, what do they do with the data? Data that isn’t erased permanently can be retrieved, causing them to become victims of identity theft. Fortunately, we offer a solution for that too with SafeErase.

Research shows that identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America and affects approximately 19 people per minute. The average victim of identity theft suffers an estimated $500 and 30 hours to resolve the crime. Deleted data can be recovered; even when hard disks are formatted, data recovery software can be used to obtain personal confidential data. Laplink SafeErase protects users by permanently deleting data so that no one can retrieve and use it.

Laplink SafeErase is the fastest and most secure way to permanently delete sensitive information from an old PC before selling or recycling. Utilizing a series of government recommended deletion methods, SafeErase completely wipes personal data from the hard drive making it completely unrecoverable.  SafeErase is compatible with Windows 10, making it the perfect tool for those looking to move off Windows XP to a new Windows computer.

Full versions of PCmover can be purchased at www.laplink.com for users interested in moving off Windows XP. Laplink SafeErase is available for $29.95 at www.laplink.com.

Tips for Transferring Files to Windows 10

Moving to a new PC is quite a challenge as Windows 10 has no tools to accomplish this task. For many users, getting their data files such as photos, videos, music, email, contacts, spreadsheets, documents, etc. to their new PC is a major concern and may even result in the delay of purchasing a new PC.

There are four basic options a user can choose from to move data files to a new PC:

1. Upload files from the old PC to cloud storage (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.) Now the user can easily access these files from anywhere and download the files to their new PC. But if the user has a lot of data, the upload will take a very long time – and, their data might exceed available storage.
2. Transfer using a USB stick or external hard drive.
3. Transfer across a network user Explorer by sharing the old hard drive to the new PC.
4. Use a file transfer utility.

The key problem to all of the above options is that the user must know what they desire to transfer, must know where the data is located on the old PC, and must manage the process. The secondary problem is that there’s a good chance the user really wants more than just data files which they might not realize. A typical user will miss quite a bit of data – perhaps they leave behind their Outlook data, files they accidentally saved in an unusual location, data related to a specific application that was saved in the application’s folder (such as tax files), Internet favorites, shortcuts, and much more.

Laplink offers a better option. PCmover Professional is the only software that can selectively move programs, files and settings from an old Windows PC to a new PC. It’s fast, easy, and powerful.

PCmover-Professional-Left-New

  • Simply install PCmover on both of the computers and follow the simple wizard to transfer everything desired to the new PC.
  • Users don’t need to know where the location of their files; PCmover knows and will find and transfer all files a user wants regardless of where they were saved.
  • PCmover transfers more than just data files. It also automatically transfers all selected programs and settings. And programs are transferred ready to use on the new PC so a user doesn’t need to reinstall them or find old CDs or license keys.
  • PCmover transfers using any home or business network (wired or wireless) or using a direct-connect (Laplink High Speed Transfer Cable.
  • Once a user completes the short wizard, they walk away and PCmover does the rest.
  • Laplink also provides free 24/7 transfer assistance from certified PC migration experts who will guide the user through the transfer over the phone or by remote control.
  • Laplink also offers PCmover Enterprise which leverages the PCmover technology to allows IT departments to easily set up and manage controlled PC deployment projects for one thousand to hundreds of thousands of PCs. Organizations using PCmover Enterprise typically save over $300 per PC deployed by reducing deployment labor, post-migration support and help desk calls, as well as user down time – and end user satisfaction is higher.
  • If a user is certain they only want to copy data files, Laplink Sync is an easy and powerful solution that will transfer files between PCs, Macs, Android and iOS devices utilizing a 3-step wizard. Files are transferred directly between devices to protect privacy (i.e., no copies exist in cloud storage). Laplink Sync can be used to transfer files or to keep files synchronized between devices.

It’s Time to Buy a New PC

Making history, Microsoft released its first hardware device worthy of competing in the marketplace. The Surface Book is a 13.5-inch laptop with “a killer display, maxed-out guts, a funky cool hinge, and a display that detaches to become a thick, powerful tablet” (source.) It’s also $1,500, which is on par with Apple’s Macbook laptop series.

New and exciting laptops and convertibles (laptop/tablet) are announced everyday from major hardware manufacturers like HP, Dell, Toshiba or Lenovo. But with Microsoft’s announcement of their new hardware devices on October 6th, even critics were cheering.

With the new Windows 10 available on these new devices, it is officially the time to retire your old hardware; there has never been a better time to buy a new device. Whatever you buy, remember that Laplink’s PCmover will save your day by making a migration of your old Windows PC’s documents, folders, pictures, music, videos, user profiles, thousands of settings, and programs (applications) easy to move. PCmover automates a tedious, manual process, making it painless.PCmover-Professional-Left-New

It’s time to buy a new PC, and when you do,be sure to buy PCmover Professional with it!

Microsoft’s Windows 10 Reaches Milestone

Microsoft’s Windows 10 reaches its milestone. It only took 10 weeks for Microsoft’s newest operating system, Windows 10, to get installed on 110 million devices (source).

Windows’ boss, Terry Meyerson, revealed the following:

  • Users have asked 1 billion questions to Windows 10’s new Siri-like digital assistant, Cortana
  • Users have visited the Windows 10 app store 1 billion times
  • Facebook is developing new Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger dedicated apps for Windows 10.

What does this mean for home PC users and small businesses with old Windows operating systems on their PCs? They need to upgrade their operating system and/or hardware to the newest system in case they get left behind on old technology.

This “keep up with the technology” trend seems to be the new norm among software giants. Take for example Apple’s iOS software. Apple continues to offer updates on their mobile devices. Despite the hardware being only a year or so old, the newest operating system available now runs slower and worst of all, doesn’t feature the full range of capabilities one would experience by purchasing and upgrading to the newest hardware and software.

This is the new norm. To make this process of upgrading to Windows 10 a stress-free experience for users moving their stuff from an old PC to a newer one (or the new OS) Laplink offers PCmover Professional software.

This software is designed to work with any older version of Windows operating systems, including XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1. By installing PCmover on an old Windows PC, users can follow an easy, step-by-step “wizard” interface that guides them through selecting the many files, thousands of personalized PC settings, user profiles, and even the applications (programs) installed on your PC that you want to move over to your new Windows 10 PC. Rather than manually searching through a massive PC directory, and dragging and dropping photo, music, and video folders–PCmover searches and finds those files immediately, and moves them over to your new PC over a network or high-speed transfer cable.

The best part about PCmover Professional software is that it moves your applications–like the Microsoft Office Suite. Imagine tracking down your old serial numbers, installation CDs (if your new computer even has a CD-rom slot), or searching and downloading applications from the Internet all over again. It’d take you hours! And the savings you experience by transferring those already purchased applications to your new PC is considerable: you don’t have to re-purchase those apps!

PCmover also works to migrate everything important that is on your PC to your new operating system if all you are doing is an in-place upgrade (i.e. updating your operating system without replacing the actual computer you are using.) The best way to understand how PCmover software makes this process simple for you is by watching this video we made.
