For over twenty years, I have been a proponent of what we now call “cloud computing.”
Back in the 90’s, the approach was more simple, but the need “for cultural transformation in large enterprises and for productivity in small business” (Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, 2018) existed back then as it does today.
Microsoft currently wants to transition customers into a “paradigm of people-centered” experiences. To achieve this end, Microsoft is taking an even bigger step: transitioning the standard Windows platform to a sophisticated cloud and desktop infrastructure, where Windows 10 is just one component, albeit the necessary starting point.
With the adoption of Windows 10, Microsoft offers a clear path to an integrated cloud-desktop infrastructure that goes far beyond Windows and Office. It integrates all components into a consistent experience where the user can take advantage of workflows enabled by rich and secure cloud based applications and utilities.
Migrating to the new world of “Microsoft 365 Business” starts with Windows 10, Office 365, OneDrive and the transition to Azure Active Directory (AAD) from the old Active Directory (AD).
In addition to this new ecosystem of Microsoft cloud computing products, it is also time to think about other transitions on the horizon as the end of support looms for Windows 7 and Office 2016 in 2020.
It is not surprising that changes as paramount as these create friction. To help, Microsoft is training and enabling thousands of service providers. They are also counting on numerous ISV’s who build on top of the new platform and provide tools for a smooth transition. But, the most fundamental domain change from AD to AAD has the potential to be very time-consuming and frustrating to IT service providers and end users.
That’s where Laplink comes in. For over 35 years, Laplink has been the leader in providing data transfer and migration software – and of course, we are doing the same for cloud computing transitions.
Laplink has been a trusted partner with Microsoft since the beginning of the PC era and Microsoft can again rely on powerful tools by Laplink to simplify the PC migration process. Based on our award-winning and market-leading migration platform, PCmover, Laplink developed an innovative solution to ease the migration from AD to AAD by taking an important pain point out of the process.
Laplink is pleased to announce PCmover Profile Migrator, which allows the easy and time-saving migration of installed applications, data, and settings between user profiles on the same PC. That means everything can be automatically transferred from the old AD user profile to the new AAD profile.
In fact, PCmover Profile Migrator allows for fast and easy migration between any user profiles – regardless of the associated domain or directory services. With PCmover, there’s no need to manually copy data, update settings, or reinstall user apps. It’s all automatic, allowing the user to quickly start working in the new AAD environment or other new domain.
