35 Years Later

Sometimes it is hard to remember the beginning of computing. Today technology is an integral part of our lives, and the mobile cloud, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and the internet of things are all around us. Discussions about autonomous driving and even autonomous flying show high confidence that we can achieve these goals within five years. Tremendous technological progress has been made overall. Nothing was more impressive to me than the swarm of drones that Intel displayed in the 2018 Winter Olympics opening ceremony, a combination of a lot of new technology.

35 years ago as Laplink began, we also witnessed the birth of the first mobile computer: the Radio Shack M 100. The M 100 had some innovative qualities that have survived the progress of time: mobile size (laptop), LCD screen and basic computing functions.

Laplink Software was a pioneer in the early days of computing. Then called “Traveling Software,” the company built the first products for the M 100: T-DOS, Travelling Appointment Manager, Expense Manager and T-Word, the word processor that could change its font size. In the years following, groundbreaking software was created to “sync” the Sharp handheld and consequently Apple’s Newton handheld. With the emergence of the PC, Traveling Software shifted its focus to the PC and hit a home run. Launching “LapLink”, the company revolutionized direct peer-to peer communication between two PCs over a patented direct-connect cable. It was the first ad-hoc network and the go-to product for all IT professionals.

Today we take connectivity for granted and easily move files among networks and the cloud. However, everyday computing still presents challenges in some areas. Laplink saw the need for PC migration software to transfer applications, files, and settings from an old PC to a new PC. Creating the innovative PCmover software, Laplink again pioneered a whole new category. With the PCmover family of products, Laplink is the world market leader and continues to innovate to make it easier for every user to manage their PCs.

The large Tech Giants dominate the news and announce record earnings, but sometimes the small, nimble and agile companies make the difference. Laplink has done so for 35 years!
