An Enterprise migration of 100,000 PCs

One of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies with over a hundred offices worldwide faced an enormous challenge: to complete a hardware refresh and the migration of data, settings, profiles, and applications of roughly 100,000 Windows® PCs to Windows 8. The scenario was complicated by the fact that the vast majority of the employee’s PCs were still running Windows XP, whereas a fair share of employees had already upgraded to the Windows 7 OS.

Simplicity turned out to be a very important factor for selecting the right product for performing this large-scale migration. A manual migration would be too complicated and is typically not as thorough or time-effective as an automated migration solution.

Additional requirements included the following:

  • Simple and intuitive to use, without the use of XML;
  • Highly scalable to support up to 100,000 PCs;
  • Supports the transfer to and from multiple Windows OS versions;
  • A proven solution for enterprise-grade scenarios.

A big concern for the company was how the PC deployment would impact each employee’s productivity.

We needed a migration solution to meet our very specific requirements. We could not have asked for a better solution than PCmover Enterprise. -Windows 8 Global Deployment Consultant for Fortune 100 Company

The solution the company chose was Laplink® PCmover Enterprise. PCmover enabled them to complete this massive migration without losing data and applications, even the specialized, less common ones that many of the company’s employees used. This contributed early on to upper management’s approval of the PCmover solution.

Additionally, PCmover’s simple “wizard” interface was a plus. Instead of subjecting employees worldwide to a huge, unwieldy directory to view their migrated data, PCmover requires no technical expertise, works straight out of the box, and displays the information in a simple, easy-to-understand format. Employees worldwide experienced uninterrupted productivity by using PCmover Enterprise.

Enterprise Migration Services:

The PCmover® Enterprise solution offers an easy, fluid, cost-effective way to migrate all data over to the new PCs. Countless hours of labor and end-user downtime are saved across a company’s offices, including international, thus having both impact on the top and bottom line.

A Laplink Reseller Interview

Rob’s company joined the Laplink Partner Program in spring 2014, coinciding with Microsoft’s end-of-support for Windows XP. Wanting to capitalize on the opportunity, Rob’s company bought 200 licenses of PCmover Professional to bundle with their anti-virus software in an offer to clients.

Offering both PC migration services, as well as sales of software programs, Rob’s company also resold other Laplink programs like DiskImage and SafeErase to clients.

But PCmover Professional was the most valuable program.

When asked his main reason for offering PCmover to his clients, Rob said of the company’s steady sales: “Technicians know the value of time, and the value of a product that saves them time.”

For Rob’s clients, instead of working on a migration for over a 4-hour period, the entire transfer was done in 45 minutes on average.

“Usually when Microsoft is ‘forcing’ an OS upgrade, we find the greatest success,” said Rob of the business opportunity and financial gains his company experienced with reselling Laplink software programs as part of a service.

Rob’s forecast of the future in the Laplink Partner Program: “With Windows 10 coming out, and with the reviews it’s receiving, I can see a lot of people migrating.”

He additionally foresees that as soon as Windows 7 goes “end of sale” and Windows 10 truly “fills that gap”—Rob can see another big revenue opportunity for reselling PCmover.

Windows 10 will release on July 29th this year

It is clear that its release will be to great expectations. Unlike Windows 8, it is anticipated that existing PC users will switch much more rapidly to Windows 10. Here are a number of reasons why:

  • Windows 10 will be more user friendly than Windows 8, including a redesigned Start menu, virtual desktops, and re-sizable Windows Store apps that behave more like legacy apps.
  • Many of the improvements will be especially important to businesses, allowing them to deploy & manage PC’s running Windows 10 more easily and cost efficient than ever.
  • Analyst predict massive conversions from Windows XP, Vista, 7, and even 8/8.1 (supported by the fact that it will be free for Win 7 and Win 8/8.1 users.)

PC users ready to migrate or upgrade to the newest operating system by Microsoft should consider Laplink’s PCmover software to complete this upgrade quickly and easily.

Switching Hardware? Avoid The Risk of Data Theft.

from the Chairman & CEO of Laplink: Thomas Koll

With the recent launch of Microsoft’s Windows 8 which will trigger a lot of replacement sales of PCs and Laplink’s upcoming release of Laplink SafeErase Version 6, it is a good time to remind ourselves that all data we have deleted from our PCs is in no way safely deleted. Most data can be restored from a hard drive with commercially available products. Even formatting a hard drive is not good enough. My white paper from last year is a good and quick read to understand the risk associated with data deletion.
